Job Post: Occupational Hygienist (D-Level)

The ideal applicant will meet the following requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Chamber of Mines advanced certificate in Mine Environmental Control

  • Professional registration as an Occupational Hygienist with the Southern African Institute for Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH) including a Certificate in Mine Environmental Control which is the statuary qualification required for legal appointment

  • Mine ventilation planning qualification

  • RED ticket - medical certificate of fitness

  • Diploma / Degree in Occupational Hygienist

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Computer efficient (Microsoft Office suite as a minimum)

Experience:

  • At least 8-10 years’ experience in Occupational Hygiene and in mine ventilation

  • Sound knowledge of the MH & SA, OHS Act, Ventilation and Hygiene regulations and,

  • Competent in use of Ventsim software

Skills and abilities:

  • Ability to operate without supervision and to work under pressure

  • Be a self-starter and able to work according to deadlines

  • Integrity, reliable and ethical

  • Sound communication and interpersonal skills. Skills to manage a culturally diverse workforce

  • Valid certificate of fitness

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage all functions related to the Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene department

  • Create, implement and maintain systems, programmes and procedures to facilitate ventilation and occupational hygiene operational and legal compliance

  • Carry out and/or coordinate with the staff the required inspections and audits and report all matters concerning ventilation and occupational hygiene on a mine

  • Conduct and/or coordinate ventilation surveys and occupational hygiene sampling as required

  • Participate in investigations for occupational cases relating to ventilation and occupational hygiene in collaboration with the Clinic at the mine

  • Compile section ventilation layouts

  • Compile all required reports and documentation, both mandatory by the DMR or any other Competent Authority and internal at Kangra for the different Departments or Business Units

  • Manage contractors and consultants in the VOHE Department

  • Liaise with other stakeholders including government departments, other departments at Kangra Coal, etc.

  • Attend the regulatory inspection by the Authorities (mostly DMR) and prepare and follow up action plans resulting from such inspections’ findings
