Mahlatse steps in to lead Kangra’s environmental cause

Mahlatse Monareng, Kangra environmental superintendent

In the early stages of her journey as an environmentalist, Mahlatse Monareng cultivated an unwavering resolve, a quality that now guides her as Kangra's environmental superintendent. Her career began in the consulting sector, focusing on environmental impact assessment and compliance audits in energy sectors, before venturing into gold and platinum mining. She joined Kangra in February 2024. Mahlatse acknowledges, “being exposed to diverse industry experiences has been my most significant achievement and has contributed meaningfully to my career development and character.”

Born and raised in Pretoria by a single parent, Mahlatse also attributes her resilience to her upbringing. “I witnessed my mother making the most out of the little she had, catering to all our needs,” she recalls. Such values, instilled early on, played a pivotal role in shaping her identity. Since grade 11, Mahlatse has been driven by a passion for Natural Sciences. She pursued a BTech in Environmental Sciences at Tshwane University of Technology, further honed her skills through short courses, and recently completed the Management Development Programme at Stellenbosch Business School.

She emphasises, “I always strive to be impactful in all that I do, and being an environmentalist has allowed me to serve and make people see that we are connected to the environment in many ways we do not think of,” she says. Her dedication to growth and contribution reflects her unwavering commitment to Kangra's success and the broader environmental cause. “I aim for continuous improvement through compliance as well as providing mentorship and training,” she says.
