Job Post: Safety Risk Officer

The ideal applicant will meet the following requirements:

 Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Grade 12

  • Safety/Risk - Relevant qualifications - Degree/Diploma

  • Government Certificate of Competency will be advantageous

  • Valid Driver’s License

 Experience: 

  • 3-5 years Health & Safety, Risk working experience

  • Gathering, analysing, and reporting on key H&S data/statistics

  • Relevant legislation / Minerals Act / Mine Health & Safety Act/ Relevant SOP’s and COPs

  • Fully conversant with Legal Appointments

  • Knowledge of DMRE requirements and reporting

  • Good grasp of the Mine processes (Mining, Engineering, Plant etc.)

 Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Ensure your subordinates are fully conversant with MHSA and Regulations.

  • Observe and enforce all Codes of Practice, managerial instructions, procedures, directives, permissions, exemptions, etc., issued by the mine, the DMRE or any other person who is authorized to do so.

  • Provide and maintain a safe working environment by means of Planned Inspections and Observations.

  • Hold SHE meetings and provide proper and adequate SHE Training.

  • Provide employees with information, instruction, training or supervision necessary to enable them to perform their work safely.

  • Compile & draw an analysis of the Mine Near Miss/ Flash Reporting system.

  • To investigate thoroughly all accidents and incidents that are of serious/life threatening nature or, which has the potential to cause a serious loss to the company.

  • Identify record and assist in making recommendations to rectify significant hazards and risks.

  • Stop any course of work if it is identified that a significant risk exists that cannot be rectified immediately.

  • Ensure employees that are employed to do risk work are adequately trained to operate the equipment according to the Codes of Practice and other instructions.

  • Carry out periodic reviews of risk assessments on file, and after any accident / incident occurs.

  • Communicate and consult with the Mines Health and Safety committee on all serious accidents and incidents occurring on the mine.

  • Monitor the use of PPE and the risks to which employees may be exposed.

  • Conduct regular assessments of training, systems in place to address hazards and risks, systems of enforcement and codes of practice, instructions, etc., insofar as they relate to health and safety.

  • Report any contraventions of the MHSA, Regulations, Codes of Practice, instructions, permissions, exemptions, etc., to the Safety Lead.

  • Ensure that contractors comply with the Mines Contractor Management Pack and all applicable Managerial Instructions/ SOP’s /COP’s /Regulation etc.

  • The incumbent will also be responsible as the Emergency Co-ordinator in the case of an Emergency.

  • Ensure Information is kept up to date, is reliable, relevant and complete.
